“St. Afro Slays the white supremacists”- my Afro-centric twist on the icon of St. George slaying the dragon. Fitting the name of George, as so many are protesting the recent death of George Floyd. As so many brothers and sisters of color lives have been taken. As racism continues to rear its ugly head. I felt strongly to create an image that stomps out the evil and brings strength, hope and triumph over hatred. The Afro is power. I have had so many Black heroes in life going back to when I was a kid. Michael Jordan was the first, hence the number 23. M.C. Hammer was my first cassette tape when I was five, followed by Kris Kross, haha. Moving forward to Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Jimi Hendrix, Rosetta Tharpe, Sun Ra, Curtis Mayfield, James Baldwin, folk artist Thornton Dial. These are just a few of the great People of Color whom I have found strength and inspiration in. I find it so important to remind yourself of how many Black heroes one has. To know that true brother/sisterhood of humans includes us all. We mourn the senseless loss of life of fellow humans. It is always a fight, but Good Will Triumph.
